After a hundred parties, the ledger looks remarkably stable. Food and drinks dominate — together roughly 65–70% of spend — then supplies (ice, napkins, cups, trash bags: the unsexy line that fails loudly), décor, and the buffer. Our calculator allocates by style: casual gatherings shift weight to drinks and supplies (guests co-cook), big events shift it to food and décor (the party is the point).
The buffer is the best money you'll spend
Ten percent of budget, held in reserve, deployed in this order of likelihood: more ice, more of whatever dish is emptying fastest, a taxi or rideshare credit for guests who shouldn't drive, then everything else. Hosts who skip the buffer don't skip the costs — they just meet them at the corner store's Sunday-night prices.
Per-person sanity check
The calculator reports spend per guest because it's the fastest sanity check in hosting: casual gatherings land around $8–15/head, standard parties $20–35, milestone events $40+. Wildly outside those ranges isn't wrong — it just tells you which lever (guest count, menu ambition, or venue) is driving the number.
